The “German” Rome
The Duchy of Bavaria had been a fortress against the doctrines of Martin Luther and his protestant movement. The Bavarian dukes built these marvellous churches to transform Munich into a German Rome, a splendid centre of Catholicism. Many of the Munich churches are the glorious result of this effort.
We can visit the following churches:
- The “Alter Peter” – first Munich church on the “Petersbergerl”
- The “Frauenkirche” – the town’s landmark
- The “Michaelskirche” – a stronghold against the protestant danger and the first renaissance-church north of the Alps
- The “Theatinerkirche” – the first Italian baroque style church in Bavaria
- The “Asamkirche” – one of the most beautiful churches in rococo-style
